Purple Search – the search engine
colored by grapes, lavender and eggplant proudly presents a work
by the eminent poet Julia Shire.
On The Color Purple - Eggplant
It was embarrassing to admit it
in front of the thirty two fellow students
of Mrs. Abbot’s Fifth Period English class,
and as he stood to read, he again mentally
berated himself for his penchant for honesty.
Why hadn’t he just lied. Said Red or Blue or
Green, pretended for once that he was a normal
thirteen year old boy. A normal boy with a
normal favorite color.
But there it was in his hands, the neatly
printed paragraph, the title “My Favorite Color.”
It was well written, included a correctly-used
semicolon, but not one of the girls that
would surely giggle and point at him after school
would recognize a semicolon even if it
tried out for cheerleading.
He had to read, no way out now.
Maybe they weren’t paying attention,
maybe no one would remember
about the royal violet, growing up on
Heliotrope Street, the garden overgrown
with lilac, lavender, eggplants.
