Rainbow Search – the search
engine colored by the entire prismatic spectrum proudly presents
a work by the eminent poet Julia Shire.
On Colors of the Rainbow
There is an atmospheric phenomenon
inside my soul.
Light refracted against
my ribs.
A promise from God, or
maybe just a trick of
light and water,
arcing across my gut.
Something the ancient
Greeks believed to be
the path between the earth
and sky, a road to or from
heaven, depending on where
you are headed.
This road runs straight through me
from toes to scalp. I follow it,
but I’ve never found a pot of gold
under my feet.
I keep looking.
At night, there is a moonbow
behind my eyes. Others have told
me they can see it.
Seven distinct colors, though they disagree
as to the presence of indigo.
There is an atmospheric phenomenon
inside my soul.
Sometimes I think I can feel it,
lodged under my diaphragm,
holding my lungs in place.
The entire spectrum of colors
is contained within my skin.
My stomach aches when it rains.
